Angello and Smith Lead Johns Hopkins Over Rutgers, 17-6

BALTIMORE, MD – Ava Angello and Charlotte Smith scored a combined nine goals to lead seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 17-6 win over Rutgers in Big Ten action. The Blue Jays win their sixth straight as they improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the B1G, while the Scarlet Knights fall to 7-4 and 1-1 in the conference.

Angello opened the scoring just 2:15 into the game when she fired a left-handed shot to the back post. Hilary Elsner answered for the Scarlet Knights on a quick-stick just 39 seconds later. Smith put the Blue Jays back on top at the 10:26-mark with the first of her three eight-meter goals. That ignited a run of three goals in a span of 2:40 as Hopkins pushed out to a 4-1 lead.

Lily Dixon halted the run with 2:47 to play in the quarter when she cashed in a on free position shot. Ashley Mackin responded with a behind-the-back goal in transition to spark a 6-0 Hopkins' run. Four Blue Jays scored during the run, fueled by three from Angello, as Hopkins grabbed a 10-2 lead with 10:45 to play in the second. Michelle Warren scored on a one-timer off a feed from Dixon to end the Blue Jays' run.

Smith scored a second free position goal at 7:43 to push the lead back to eight. Campbell Case followed with back-to-back goals, with helpers from Angello, and Hopkins took a 13-3 lead into the half. Warren opened the third quarter with her second of the afternoon, but MK Lescault won the ensuing draw and seven seconds later, Angello picked the far post from the left alley.

Victoria Goldrick and Kayleigh Coughlin then sandwiched goals around a give-and-go combo for Mackin and Lescault and it was 15-6 Blue Jays with 9:09 to play. Smith pushed the lead back to 10 with another free position goal at 7:24 and then Hoss capped the scoring with a behind-the-back shot off a Lacey Downey feed at 3:41.
