Hopkins Blanks Catholic, 9-0

BALTIMORE, MD – Playing its only scheduled evening game of the 2025 regular season, the second-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team jumped out to an early lead and rode a dominating performance on the mound from sophomore Drew Grumbles to a 9-0 victory over visiting Catholic at Babb Field Wednesday evening. The win is the fifth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 18-2 on the year in the victory. Catholic had a four-game winning streak snapped and slips to 12-8.

The Blue Jays plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first to grab a quick 2-0 lead. With two outs and Lucas Geer at second after a leadoff double, Caleb Cyr reached on a throwing error by the Cardinal shortstop that chased home Geer. Cyr then raced home on a double down the left field line by senior Dillon Souvignier.

Johns Hopkins extended the lead to 6-0 with a four-run second off Catholic starter Mac Meara with all four runs coming across with two outs. Geer drove home Dylan Whitney with a single to right and Jacob Harris followed with a single of his own to bring senior Shawn Steuerer to the plate. Steuerer, who was making his 150th career start, took a Meara fastball offering deep over the fence in left center to give the Jays the six-run lead.

While the Blue Jay offense got going early, Grumbles got it going on the mound early and never let the Cardinals threaten. He allowed just two base runners through six innings – one of which reached on an error and another on a hit by pitch – didn't allow a hit until Dante Pozzi's infield single in the seventh and retired one batter in the eighth before turning the game over to Ryan Anderson. Anderson got the two final outs in the eighth and Will Boneno closed things out with a scoreless ninth to lock down Hopkins' second shutout of the season.

Johns Hopkins closed out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on a Cyr RBI-double and a two-run Clay Hartje double.

The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they head to Franklin & Marshall for a Centennial Conference-opening doubleheader against the Diplomats.

Inside the Box Score – Johns Hopkins

• Cyr extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his RBI-double in the seventh.

• Steuerer's home run in the second inning was the 51st of his career, which tied for the most among active Division III players.

• Grumbles went 7.1 innings and allowed just the one hit while striking out 10 to pick up the victory.  The 10 strikeouts are one shy of his career high.

• Grumbles, Anderson and Boneno scattered two hits over nine innings.  The two hits match the season-low allowed by the Blue Jay pitching staff; this is the fourth time in 20 games this season that the staff has held the opposition to two hits and the ninth time the unit has allowed five hits or less.
