BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 4-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team faced Rutgers-Newark (10-12, 2-2) Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Scarlet Raiders 12-9. The Blue Jays used a six-run eighth to complete the come-from-behind victory.
The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to an early one-run lead, plating a run in the first on a Matthew Storch single. Hopkins didn't trail for long, scoring three runs in the bottom half on a
Caleb Cyr sacrifice fly and a
Dillon Souvignier two-run homer.
Matt Savedoff, in relief of
Charles Monterrosa, struggled to find his command, surrendering three runs to Rutgers-Newark in the third. The Scarlet Raiders then scored the game's next three runs, holding onto a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
Hopkins (20-3, 1-1) battled, getting the first three Jays on base via the walk. With the bases loaded,
Jimmy Stevens flied out to right, scoring
Shawn Steuerer.
Lukas Geer followed suit, roping a ball to short, plating the Jays fifth run, cutting the lead to two.
Damian Brown then launched a solo shot in the seventh, lowering the Scarlet Raiders lead to one.
With the game in reach, Hopkins pitching walked two runs home in the top of the eighth, extending the visitor's lead to three.
The Blue Jays strung together three straight hits to begin the bottom of the eighth, cutting the lead to two on a Geer single.
Jake Siani then loaded the bases with a beauty of a bunt. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter,
Clay Hartje roped a double down the first base line, knotting the game at nine. With only one out, Steuerer put a ball in play, forcing the Scarlet Raiders second baseman to make an errant throw, giving Hopkins the two-run lead. Souvignier added an additional run before the inning was over on a single, plating Steuerer.
The Blue Jays held a three-run lead headed into ninth, turning the ball over to
William Boneno. Boneno sat the Scarlet Raiders down one-two-three, earning his second save of the season.
Camden Curley recorded his first collegiate win, getting the final out of the eighth inning in 0.1 innings of work.
The Blue Jays are back in action Tuesday, April 1 at Babb Field, taking on Gettysburg in conference action with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
