Seventh-Ranked Maryland Holds Off Johns Hopkins, 13-11

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Host and seventh-ranked Maryland held off a late Johns Hopkins' rally as the Terps beat the Blue Jays, 13-11, in both teams' regular season finale. The Blue Jays fall to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten, while the Terps improve to 11-4 and 7-1.

Trailing 10-5 after a Devin Livingston unassisted tally at 7:14 in the third, Hopkins used a 3-0 run to pull within two early in the fourth. The three goals came in a span of just three minutes and 57 seconds.

Lacey Downey sparked the run when she took a pass from Charlotte Smith and blew home her third of the afternoon at 3:20. Just 32 seconds later, Ava Angello scooped a loose ball in the slot and beat JJ Suriano with a behind-the-back shot. Taylor Hoss then opened the fourth quarter with a BTB of her own and it was 10-8 with 14:23 left in the game.

Hopkins could get no closer than the two-goal deficit as the teams traded goals over the final nine minutes and Maryland grabbed the 13-11 win.

Downey opened the scoring less than two minutes in with a rip from eight meters out off a Smith helper. Smith then cashed in on an eight-meter at 11:58 and the Blue Jays led 2-0. Jordyn Lipkin answered for the Terps with back-to-back goals to knot the score at the 8:06-mark. Downey put Hopkins back on top with a free position goal just 65 seconds later.

Lipkin scored her third of the quarter with 3:29 left in the first to spark a 5-0 Terps' run that spanned nearly 10 minutes. Kori Edmondson fueled the run with back-to-back goals, bridging the quarter break, as Maryland took a 7-3 lead.

Hoss and Angello then scored consecutive goals on the eight meter to pull the Blue Jays back within two at the 4:49-mark. Lipkin, Edmondson and Livingston answered with three straight for the Terps as they pushed out to the 10-5 lead midway through the third quarter.

Hoss and Downey led Hopkins with three goals and four points each. Hoss has notched 16 points (10g, 6a) in the last four games. Angello notched a hat trick, her 11th of the season, and pushed her goal-scoring streak to 35 games. Smith also had a three-point outing with a goal and two assists. Laurel Gonzalez tallied 11 draw controls, one more than Maryland had as a team. In addition, her 11th draw broke Jennifer Barry's school single season record of 133. Morgan Giardina finished with nine saves and a caused turnover.

Lipkin (4g) and Lauren LaPointe (2g, 2a) paced Maryland with four points each. Edmondson (3g) and Chrissy Thomas (2g, 1a) add three points each. Edmondson also had a team-high four draws and Kayla Gilmore notched three caused turnovers. Suriano tallied nine saves in the win.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 23 in the Big Ten Quarterfinals.
