Ohio State Pushes Past Johns Hopkins, 14-10

Third-Ranked Buckeyes Use 4-0 Second-Half Run to Fuel Victory

BALTIMORE, MD – The third-ranked Ohio State men's lacrosse team used a 4-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters to pull away from host Johns Hopkins for a 14-10 victory at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.  The win is the 11th straight for the Buckeyes, who improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten, while the Blue Jays slip to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten.

Johns Hopkins had used a 5-2 spurt to trim an 8-3 halftime deficit to 10-8 after back-to-back goals from Charlie Iler and Dylan Bauer in a 59-second span midway through the third quarter capped the run.  The Blue Jays then won the ensuing faceoff with a golden chance to pull within one, but the Buckeyes forced a turnover and Garrett Haas scored off a quick restart from the endline to jump-start the game-turning four-goal run.

Haas added his second of the game three minutes later to make it 12-8 at the end of the third quarter and Alex Marinier and Gannon Matthews added strikes before the fourth quarter was four minutes old to push the lead to 14-8.  The Blue Jays scored twice in the final three minutes to account for the final scoring.

Early on, the Buckeyes jumped out to a quick three-goal lead on strikes from Jack McKenna, Marinier and Liam White before the Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on back-to-back goals from Bauer and Erik Chick.

Marinier then ignited a 5-1 half-ending run for Buckeyes with the second of his five first-half goals to give Ohio State a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chick, who finished with his first career hat trick, stuck his second of the game early in the second quarter when he quick-sticked home a feed from Charlie Iler to make it 4-3.  The Blue Jays had a golden opportunity to pull even 90 seconds later, but Ohio State goalie Caleb Fyock was matched sticks with Iler down low in a one-on-one situation on the crease and Marinier stuck his third of the day less than 40 seconds later to push the lead to 5-3.

A Ben Mayer goal and two more from Marinier closed out the first half and set the stage for the Hopkins run that came in the third quarter.

Chuck Rawson scored off a rebound at the 13:22 mark and Jimmy Ayers finished off a quick feed to the slot from Chick to give the Blue Jays momentum early in the third quarter.  McKenna and Haas then bookended a Books English goal for the Blue Jays to make it 10-6 before the Iler and Bauer goals pulled the Blue Jays within 10-8.

That score held for just over three minutes before Haas ignited the 4-0 run that sealed the win for the Buckeyes.

Fyock proved to be the difference as he registered 15 saves, including seven in the second quarter, when the Buckeyes pushed out to the 8-3 lead, and four in the fourth after the Blue Jays had jumped back into the game in the third.

Marinier scored a game-high six goals and added one assist and Haas added the three goals and one assist.  McKenna was the only other multi-goal scorer for the Buckeyes as he added the two goals.

Johns Hopkins held advantages in shots (38-30), and ground balls (30-21) and got a 19-of-28 performance with eight ground balls form senior faceoff specialist Logan Callahan.

Chick's four points (3g, 1a) led the way for the Blue Jays, who also got two goals and one assist from Bauer and two goals from Rawson.
