BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 3-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team faced McDaniel (12-15-1, 3-4) Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Green Terror 13-2. The Blue Jays used a seven-run seventh to invoke the mercy rule, securing its seventh-consecutive win.
Hopkins (25-3, 6-1) kicked off the third inning with back-to-back walks, advancing the runners on an errant throw by McDaniel's pitcher. With two runners in scoring position,
Jake Siani grounded out to second, bringing in the game's first run.
Alex Shane then blooped a single to right, plating
Dylan Whitney and giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
McDaniel threatened in the bottom of the third with two base runners, however,
Drew Grumbles hurled a pair of strikeouts to escape the jam. In the next inning, the Green Terror once again had runners on second and third, and this time, McDaniel's third baseman hit a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to one.
The Blue Jays responded, plating four runs in the fifth. Siani led off with a double, then came around to score on a
Jacob Harris single.
Jimmy Stevens followed with a bases-clearing single, extending the lead to five.
William Boneno took the reins from
Drew Grumbles in the sixth and quickly loaded the bases with two walks and one out. He struck out the next batter, but then hit a batter, giving the Green Terror its second run.
Thomas Cancian, in relief, popped up the one batter he faced, maintaining a four-run lead.
Hopkins broke the game wide open in the seventh with a seven-run outburst.
Dillon Souvignier ignited the rally with a single to center, followed by a two-run double from Stevens.
Clay Hartje drove in the Jays' 10th run with a single to right, then
Dylan Whitney's sacrifice fly brought in the 11th run. Siani capped the inning with a two-run blast over the right field fence, triggering the 10-run mercy rule and securing a Blue Jays victory.
