Five Elected to Serve as 2025 Johns Hopkins Football Captains

Bourdo, Harvey, Newell, Nwosu, Schroeder to Lead Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, MD – Dan Wodicka, the James F. Margraff head coach of football at Johns Hopkins, announced today that five individuals have been elected to serve as team captains during the upcoming 2025 season.  The five include one third-year selection in graduate student Bay Harvey (QB) and four first-time selections in seniors Carson Bourdo (DB), Xavier Newell (DL), Michael Nwosu (OL) and Geoff Schroeder (RB).

Below is a quick look at the 2025 Johns Hopkins football captains.

Carson Bourdo (Sr. • DB)
Of Note: 
One of the top returning defensive backs in the nation after earning First Team AFCA and Second Team D3football.com All-America honors last season.  Finished third on the team in tackles last season with a career-high 66 and counted 5.5 tackles for loss and one sack among his 66 tackles.  He also led the team with four interceptions and had seven pass breakups and one fumble recovery to his credit as well.  In addition to his All-America nods, he was also a First Team All-Centennial Conference selection and enters his final season with 116 tackles, 12 pass breakups and five interceptions to his credit.

Bay Harvey (Gr. • QB)
Of Note
:  First three-time captain at Johns Hopkins since Stu Markley (1991-93).  Played the first three games last season before missing the final 11 with an injury; returning this season as a graduate student.  Enjoyed an outstanding first year as a starter in 2023 as he earned Second Team All-Centennial and Third Team D3football.com All-Region honors.  Was 250-of-362 (.691) for 3,297 yards with 36 touchdowns against eight interceptions and was also second on the team in rushing (627) and led the team with 10 rushing touchdowns.  Set school records for overall touchdowns (46), passing touchdowns (36) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (10).  Was also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

Xavier Newell (Sr. • DE)
Of Note
:  Enters second season as a starter at defensive end after playing in and starting all 14 games last season.  Totaled 48 tackles, including 10.5 for losses and 4.5 sacks, to go along with two pass breakups and one fumble recovery in 2024.  Ranked second on the team in tackles for loss and third in sacks as a junior. Counts 73 career tackles, including 12.5 for losses and 5.5 sacks, to his credit.

Michael Nwosu (Sr. • OL)
Of Note
:  Already one of the most decorated offensive linemen in school history.  Two-time Fourth Team D3football.com All-American who made a seamless move from guard to tackle during the middle of the 2024 season.  A three-time All-Centennial selection (2nd, 1st, 1st) and a two-time First Team D3football.com All-Region pick, he has played in all 38 games since his arrival at Johns Hopkins and was also the 2022 Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year.

Geoff Schroeder (Sr. • RB)
Of Note
:  Second Team All-Centennial Conference selection after leading the team in rushing with 747 yards and five TDs in 14 games while adding 18 receptions for 194 yards and one TD as a junior.  Has career rushing totals of 314 carries for 1,541 yards and 11 TDs and also has 34 receptions for 381 yards and two TDs.  Ranks 21st in school history in career rushing yards and enters the 2025 season needing just 78 all-purpose yards to reach 2,000.

Johns Hopkins will open the 2025 season on Saturday, September 6 when the Blue Jays travel to Ithaca to take on the Bombers.  The Blue Jays, who posted a 12-2 record, won the Centennial Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals last season, are ranked third in Lindy's Division III Preseason Top 10.  The game at Ithaca is the first of three straight non-conference games to open the season for Johns Hopkins with those three opponents (Ithaca-John Carroll-Susquehanna) having posted a combined record of 27-9 last season.
