Johns Hopkins Sweeps Caltech and Ottawa (AZ)

SOUTHLAKE, TX – Johns Hopkins opened a trip to the Lone Star State with a pair of 20-goal wins Saturday. Hopkins began the day with a 23-8 win over Caltech and then beat Ottawa (AZ), 22-13, to improve to 5-1 on the season.  
 
Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the game's opening five minutes versus Caltech with goals from Gavin Brooke, Owen Bartlett and Phillip Long. Caltech answered with a 3-1 spurt to make it a 5-4 game midway through the second. Long scored a six-on-five goal with 2:50 to play in the half to spark a nine-goal run. Seven different Blue Jays scored during the run, capped by an Andrew Lee strike at 3:56 that put JHU up 14-4.
 
Caltech pulled back within eight with a 3-1 spurt late in the third. A Mason Hofmann five-meter goal with just 27 ticks left in the quarter ignited another 9-0 run that spanned nearly eight minutes. Brody Mars fueled the run, that saw six players score, with three goals to put Hopkins up 23-7. Eric Verheyden tacked one a late goal for Caltech to account for the 23-8 final.
 
Brooke (2g, 2a) and Max Blecher (1g, 3a) led the Blue Jays with four points apiece. Lee, Mars and Long had a hat trick each and Iason Mihalopoulos added three points (2g, 1a). Brooke also had a team-best steals while Matthieu Giauque drew four ejections.
 
In the afternoon, Hopkins seven of the first eight goals against Ottawa to take a 7-1 lead at the 6:40-mark in the second. Six Blue Jays scored, led by a pair from Hoffman, during the opening run. The Spirit responded with a 4-1 run in a four-minute span to make it an 8-5 game late in the half. Luke Mendelsohn and Giauque scored twice in the final 63 seconds to give JHU a 10-5 lead at the break.
 
Tamas Misky scored for Ottawa to open the half, but Hopkins answered with three straight to push its lead to 13-6. The Spirit came right back with a 3-2 spurt and the Blue Jays led 15-9 with 7:11 to play in the game. The teams went back-and-forth over the ensuing eight minutes, and it was 19-13 JHU with 2:12 to play. Hopkins closed the game out with three unanswered to take the 22-13 win.
 
Hofman paced the Blue Jays with five goals and seven points and had a pair of steals. Mihalopoulos tallied five points (4g, 1a) to go with three draw ejections, two steals and two blocks. Alec Baker handed out a team-best five assists and added a goal and three steals. Bartlett added four points, including his 100th career goal, and Mendelsohn tallied a hat trick.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 14 with games against UC Merced (8:30 am CT) and Austin (1 pm CT).
