EWING, NJ – The 24
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored three second-half goals to break open a tight game as the Blue Jays knocked off host TCNJ, 4-0, at Lions Stadium Tuesday night. The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 4-2-1, while the Lions slip to 2-3-2.
Â
The Blue Jays led 1-0 at the half on the second goal in as many games from sophomore
Irene Sanchez Burgueno, who fired home her second goal of the season off an assist from senior
Maria Romo-Nichols in the 17
th minute. The duo has now teamed up on three Blue Jay goals in the last two games with Sanchez Burgeuno scoring twice off Romo-Nichols helpers and returning the favor once herself.
Â
The one-goal lead held through the remainder of the first half despite the Blue Jays controlling possession and registering eight of the game's nine shots before the break.
Â
The second half was all Johns Hopkins and it took less than two minutes for the Blue Jays to double the lead. Working off a corner, graduate student
Kei Kitamura floated a ball deep into the box towards the back post that TCNJ goalie
Ellen Williams was able to punch away, only to have the loose ball land right at the foot of senior
Ella Macko, who quickly fired home her first goal of the season from five yards out.
Â
The Blue Jays continued to press as they would take 15 shots and collect four corner kicks after halftime and finally got the elusive third goal in the 59
th minute. Romo-Nichols worked deep into the box to Williams' left and crossed a ball to the middle, where several players poked at it as Williams held her line. As the ball squirted out of the scrum in the direction of Williams, Blue Jay sophomore
Carolyn Johnson ripped one high past a defenseless Williams to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
Johns Hopkins closed out the scoring in the 77
th minute off a set piece from the wing about 30 yards from the goal. Kitamura lofted a free kick into the middle of the box, where freshman
Carolina Chao headed home the first goal of her career to account for the final scoring.
Â
Johns Hopkins held decided advantages in shots (23-5) and corners (8-0) in notching their second straight decisive road win against TCNJ. In their last trip to Lions Stadium, the Blue Jays topped TCNJ 5-0 in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
Â
Williams finished with seven saves for TCNJ, while
Ella Kruntchev went the distance in goal for the Blue Jays and turned away a pair of offerings from the Lions to pick up the first solo shutout of her career.
Â
Notes:Â
• The assist for Romo-Nichols is the 20
th of her career. She is the seventh player in program history to amass 20 or more career assists.
• Johnson has scored a goal in four consecutive games. The four-game run is tied for the 13
th-longest streak in program history.
Â
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 20 when the Blue Jays welcome Swarthmore to Homewood Field (3 pm) for the Centennial Conference-opener for both teams.
