Johnson Nets a Pair to Power Hopkins Past Haverford, 2-0

Sophomore Has Scored in Six of Last Eight Games

HAVERFORD, PA – Sophomore Carolyn Johnson scored a pair of goals – one in the first 10 minutes of the game and another in the last 10 – to power the 25th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team to a 2-0 win at Haverford Saturday afternoon.  The win, the second straight and fourth in five games for the Blue Jays, lifts Hopkins to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference.  The Fords slip 3-4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial.

It didn't take Johnson and Blue Jays long to grab the lead as they capitalized on an early corner kick to grab a one-goal lead in the ninth minute.  Kei Kitamura's corner found senior Ella Macko in the middle of the box and Macko headed one towards the goal that Caroline Marcus tried to flick past Haverford goalie Allie Billups.  Billups was able to smother Marcus's shot from in tight, but Johnson poked the rebound into an open goal to get the Blue Jays on the board.

Johnson's goal came seven minutes after the Fords nearly scored before the game was two minutes old.  Sprung from beyond midfield on a breakaway, Olivia Daulerio side-stepped Blue Jay goalie Ella Kruntchev near the top of the box, only to have her shot at the open goal blocked by Macko to keep the game scoreless.

The Blue Jay would pressure the Fords throughout the first half as they built an 11-4 advantage in shots, but Billups was up to the task, turning away four on-cage offerings to keep it a one-goal game.

The script remained the same in the second half with the Blue Jays firing off 11 of the game's 13 shots after the break, only to have Billups match her first-half effort with four saves to keep the Fords within a goal.

As the clock dripped under seven minutes remaining, the Blue Jays were able to net the insurance goal.  Kitamura found senior Maria Romo-Nichols on the flank and she was able to get a step on her defender as she drove towards the box to Billups' right.  As she approached the edge of the area, she was able to cross a ball into the middle, where Johnson headed home her second of the game to seal the victory.

Johnson has scored at least one goal in six of the last seven games and she now has a team-high eight goals on the year.  Her two-goal effort, the first of her career, marks the second consecutive game that Johns Hopkins has had a player score twice as freshman Lena Olbrys struck twice in a 4-0 win at McDaniel in the Blue Jays' last game.

Johns Hopkins held a 22-6 advantage in shots and collected nine of the game's 12 corners.  Kruntchev posted two saves to pick up the second solo shutout of her career.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, October 1 when the Blue Jays welcome Mary Washington to Homewood Field for their final non-conference game of the season (7 pm).
