LEXINGTON, VA – Host and 13
th-ranked Washington & Lee scored the first two goals of the game and then held off a strong push from fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins as the Generals topped the Blue Jays, 2-1, in key non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon. The Generals improve to 3-1 with the victory, while the Blue Jays slip to 2-2-1.
Â
Washington & Lee fired off seven of the nine first-half shots in the game and broke the ice in the 30
th minute off a corner kick.Â
Bryn Bissinger played her offering from the flag into the middle of the box, where
Sarah Zimmerman got a head on it to keep it in play. Zimmerman's header landed right at the foot of
Amelia Manke, who punched home her first goal of the season to give the Generals a one-goal lead.
Â
The one-goal cushion held until the 57
th minute, when
Megan Zimmerman slipped a cross through the box that
Helen Otteni redirected past a defenseless
Ella Kruntchev to double the Generals' lead.
Â
Johns Hopkins turned up the pressure after Otteni's goal, opening up the game and firing six shots over the next 10 minutes before finally breaking through in the 68
th minute.
Â
Working the middle of the field, senior
Maria Romo-Nichols slipped a pass to junior
Caroline Marcus, who one-touched a feed to
Carolyn Johnson on the run down the middle of the field. Johnson split a pair of defenders and went in alone from the top of the box and pulled General goalie
Kate McEnroe off her line before slotting home her third of the year just inside the far post.
Â
Johns Hopkins kept the pressure up throughout the final 21 minutes after Johnson scored, but couldn't solve McEnroe again despite registering 12 of the game's 15 second-half shots. McEnroe made seven saves in the final 45 minutes with the Blue Jays' final shot, an offering from the side of the box from Johnson, drifting over the crossbar with just over two minutes remaining.
Â
The Blue Jays held a 14-10 advantage in shots and the teams evenly split the four corners in the game. McEnroe posted seven saves (all in the second half), while Kruntchev turned away a pair of W&L offerings.
Â
Johns Hopkins will close a six-games in 12 days stretch on Wednesday, September 10 when the Blue Jays welcome Salisbury to Homewood Field (4 pm).
