BALTIMORE, MD – In a match-up between the two teams picked to finish first and second in the Centennial Conference, it was the preseason favorite Swarthmore that grabbed a six-point win over host Johns Hopkins Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Garnet improve to 7-0 and 5-0 in the conference.
Hopkins opened the meet with second and third-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of
Jaya Veerapaneni,
Reese Rosenthal,
Ken Lee and
Anna Miler finished second in 1:44.71, just 0.21 seconds out of first.
Lily Rossmann,
Amy Hu,
Kate Petitt and
Kimberly Lan took third with a time of 1:46.98. The Blue Jays did the same in the 1000 Free.
Julia Tuinman swam to a second-place finish in 10:41.05 and
Carly White placed third in 10:43.52.
Melissa Er then grabbed the first of her two individual wins on the afternoon, grabbing first in the 200 Free with a swim of 1:52.92.
Claire Han finished in 1:53.72, just 0.16 seconds out of second place. Lee followed with the first of her three wins, beating the field with a swim of 55.92 in the 100 Back. Veerapaneni clocked in at 56.53 to take second by eight-hundredths of a second. Both Lee and Veerapaneni's times are NCAA B times.
Hu finished in a close second, by just seven-hundredths of a second, in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:06.28. Rosenthal took fourth place in 1:07.03.
Maddie Horner swam to a second-place finish in the 200 Fly in 2:08.78, while Petitt took third in 2:09.73. Miler led the Blue Jays with a third-place finish in the 50 Free in 24.17, beating teammate
Elizabeth Cohen by two-hundredths of a second. Cohen followed that with a second-place finish in the 100 Free (52.36) and
Alex Watson placed fourth in 53.00.
Lee grabbed their second win and broke their own pool record with a swim of 1:59.49 in the 200 Back. Their time is an NCAA B time and beat the field by more than 4.7 seconds. Veerapaneni finished in third place with a time of 2:04.30, just eight-hundredths of a second out of second.
Rachel Davis swam to a second-place finish in the 200 Breast in 2:24.13, followed by Hu in third in 2:25.90.
Er picked up her second win, by more than three seconds, with a swim of 5:05.13 in the 500 Free. Lee then made it three individual wins, and another NCAA B time, as they clocked in at 55.56 to win the 100 Fly. Petitt took third place with a time of 57.45. Horner placed second in the 400 IM in 4:34.89 and Davis followed in third place in 4:35.90.
Hopkins wrapped up the meet with second and third-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Er, Rosenthal,
Stella Zhang and Miler finished in 3:28.93. Watson, Lan, Cohen and Han followed closely in third with a time of 3:29.08. Both teams are NCAA B times.
Hopkins is right back in action on Saturday, January 17 as the Blue Jays visit the NYU Violets. The non-conference meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
