BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team delivered a dominant performance Saturday afternoon inside Goldfarb Gymnasium, overwhelming Ursinus in straight sets (25-11, 25-14, 25-6) to extend its winning streak to seven matches. The Blue Jays controlled the match from the opening serve to the final point, improving to 10-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Centennial Conference play.
Hopkins set the tone early, pairing an aggressive attack with suffocating defense to leave Ursinus defeated. The Blue Jays cruised through the opening set, 25-11, before turning up the pressure in the second, winning 13 of the first 14 points after conceding the opener to build a commanding lead. Hopkins closed out the frame, 25-14, moving within a set of another decisive conference victory.
The third set proved to be the exclamation point. After Ursinus briefly tied the score at 1-1, Hopkins erupted for 15 consecutive points, with
Sami Hockers delivering five – of her eight total – service aces during the run. The surge put the Blue Jays firmly in control at 16-1, and they never looked back. A block from
Grace Lovell and
Elysa Pulliam extended the advantage to 20-2 before Lovell's kill capped the 25-6 set victory and completed the sweep.
The Blue Jays' dominance extended across the stat sheet.
Ivy Swafford led all Hopkins hitters with 14 kills, while Hockers orchestrated the offense with a match-high 21 assists and served up eight aces.
Bethany Sherwood anchored the net with five blocks, and
Nicole Tuszynski paced the defense with a match-high eight digs, holding Ursinus to a -.081 hitting percentage.
Hopkins returns to action Wednesday, October 14, hosting Swarthmore in Centennial Conference play for its annual Country Night match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.
