BALTIMORE, MD – The only two that really mattered to the Johns Hopkins football team after Friday's game against Gettysburg was the two in the win column as the Blue Jays picked up their second win of the year with a 40-14 victory under the lights at Homewood Field.Â
That was hardly the only two that played into the 18th consecutive win in the series for Johns Hopkins.
Consider:
• Johns Hopkins (2-5, 1-3 Centennial) got two touchdown receptions from senior Robby Enright.
• The Blue Jay defense forced two turnovers, which the Blue Jay offense promptly turned into two touchdowns.
• Junior quarterback Luke Baker threw a pair of touchdown passes – the two to Enright – and also rushed for a score. By the way, Baker wears, you guessed it, number two.
• The Blue Jays turned a two-score game into a three-score game when Ty Pugliano, wearing number 22, scampered 13 yards on a fourth-down play to cap a scoring drive that covered … 22 yards.
• For good measure, the Blue Jays got two points on a safety when the Bullets snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt.
There is one other number worth noting – four. As in, Johns Hopkins scored four of its five touchdowns on fourth-down plays. Officially, there's no record of Johns Hopkins ever scoring four times in a game on fourth down before Friday night. Unofficially, we are just going to assume that in 1,177 all-time games before Friday night, Johns Hopkins had never done this before. Another Blue Jay score actually came on fourth down as well, but don't most field goals happen on fourth down anyway?
For all the twos that played into the victory, it was a three-score run for the Blue Jays that turned a 7-3 second-quarter deficit into a 24-7 lead that was never seriously threatened over the final 16 minutes of the game.
After Sean Clark hit Danny Bonato with an 18-yard touchdown pass with 10:02 on the second-quarter clock to give the Bullets a 7-3 lead, the Blue Jays began their run with a 12-play, 74-yard drive that ate 4:59 off the clock and was capped by the first of Enright's two touchdown receptions, this one from 12 yards out with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter that gave the Blue Jays a 10-7 lead.
The three-point lead held for more than 15 minutes until the Blue Jays used another long drive, this one a 69-yarder that took just seven plays and was polished off with a Baker-to-Enright 24-yard scoring pass with just over a four minutes remaining in the third quarter that extended the lead to 17-7.
The third of the three consecutive Blue Jay scores came shortly after Sawyer Olson recovered a Bullet fumble at the Gettysburg 22-yard line less a minute after Enright' second touchdown. Pugliano bounced outside on fourth-and-one from the Bullet 13 and outraced a pair of defenders to the pylon to extend the margin to 17 (24-7).
Gettysburg pieced together a 10-play, 79-yard drive that bridged the third and fourth quarters after Pugliano's touchdown to trim the deficit to 10 on a one-yard Shane Donoghue run early in the fourth quarter.
The Bullets (2-5, 0-4 CC) forced a quick punt after the Donoghue touchdown, but were pinned inside their five-yard line by a 57-yard Chase Alley punt for Johns Hopkins. Four plays later, a high snap on a punt sailed out of the back of the end zone to make it 26-14.
Johns Hopkins would turn the first career interception by freshman Ryder Register into their second 22-yard scoring drive of the night, this one capped by a Baker four-yard run on fourth-and goal, and Milan Desai later closed the scoring with a five-yard run on fourth-and-goal to account for the 40-14 final score.
