Baker Paces Johns Hopkins in 24-10 Win Over Penn State Behrend

BALTIMORE, MD – Alec Baker tied the school record with 12 goals to lead Johns Hopkins to a 24-10 win over Penn State Behrend in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) action Friday night. The Blue Jays improve to 12-6 overall while the Lions fall to 3-6.

Hopkins grabbed an early 3-0 lead, thanks to a pair of Baker goals. Matthew Woods got PSB on the board at the 1:32-mark and just 28 seconds later Jasper Hirt scored a six-on-five goal to put JHU up 4-1 after one. Baker and Ivo Tagliana traded goals to open the second and it was 5-2 just 62 seconds in.

Mason Hofmann and Luke Mendelsohn scored twice in just 30 seconds to push the lead to 7-2. Baker then capped a three-goal spurt with 5:20 to play. Dylan Hayslip got one back for the Lions with an exclusion goal at 4:45-. David Edelman answered with back-to-back goals to put Hopkins up 10-3.

Lukas Miller and Zach Bradshaw scored consecutive goals to cut the deficit to five with 1:52 to play in the half. The Blue Jays weren't done yet, getting goals from Patrick Rooney and Ben Lucas to take a 12-5 lead into the break. Baker scored to open the third, but Owen Kroh answered with a pair just 14 seconds apart. Baker then scored on a five-meter to ignite a six-goal run, in which he scored five of the six. That pushed Hopkins' lead to 19-7 with six minutes to play.

Tagliana halted the run with a six-on-five goal at 5:20, but JHU came right back with goals from Max Blecher and Baker. Tagliana then scored a penalty goal at 4:12, but the Blue Jays once again answered, scoring three in 92 seconds to go up 24-9. Miller closed out the scoring for the Lions with 27 ticks on the clock to account for the 24-10 final.

Baker tied Emerson Sullivan's record with 12 goals in the game, while also grabbing five steals and drawing two ejections. Ethan Babel handed out a career-high five assists and finished with six points. Hofmann (1g, 2a) and Edleman (2g, 1a) notched three points each. Blecher (1g, 1a), Hirt (2g), Mendelsohn (2g), Lucas (1g, 1a), Blake Lowe (2a) and Phillip Long (1g, 1a) had two points apiece.
