Johns Hopkins Races Past Austin College, 18-8

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins jumped out to an 11-2 lead and went on to beat Austin, 18-8, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 13-6 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while the Kangaroos fall to 2-8 and 1-1.

Aaron Mendoza struck first, scoring 69 seconds in to give Austin an early lead. Alec Baker answered with a six-on-five goal less than a minute later to spark a 5-0 run. Patrick Rooney capped the run with 54 seconds left in the first to put JHU up 5-1. Mendoza scored on a man-up at 16 seconds to halt the run. But Hopkins wasn't done for the quarter as Max Blecher scored in the waning seconds.

Blecher's goal ignited a 6-0 Blue Jay run as they pushed out to an 11-2 lead with 3:35 to play in the second. Five different Jays scored during the run, punctuated by a Ben Lucas score. Mendoza and Owen Altermatt sandwiched a pair around a Blecher score and Hopkins led 12-4 at the half.

Luke Mendelsohn scored just 23 seconds into the third to kick-start a four-goal spurt for JHU. Lucas capped the run with a five-meter score at 3:01 to put Hopkins on top 16-4. The 'Roos answered with three in a row to cut the deficit to single digits. Owen Bartlett and Blecher sandwiched scores around a Mendoza strike in the final four minutes to account for the 18-8 final.

Blecher and Mason Hofmann led the Blue Jays with four goals each, while Blecher also handed out a pair of assists. Lucas (3g) and Bartlett (1g, 2a) added three points apiece. Baker led the defense with a career-high seven steals, two shy of the school record. Sebastian Isaacs finished with seven saves to earn the win in the cage.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, October 25 versus Conn College (12:30 pm) and Washington & Jefferson (3:30 pm).
