CARLISLE, PA – The race for the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Tournament will come down the final day of the regular season after Johns Hopkins topped Dickinson, 2-0, at Miller Memorial Field on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays ran their winning streak to eight games with the victory, bumped their overall season record to 12-1-2 and raised their Centennial record to 8-1. Dickinson slips to 11-2-4 overall and 6-1-2 in the Centennial.
Â
With its eight Centennial wins, Johns Hopkins has 24 points in the league standings, one more than second-place Swarthmore (7-0-2), which has 23 points. A win in the regular-season finale on Saturday against Ursinus will lock up the top seed for the Blue Jays. There are other scenarios that would secure the number one seed for the Jays, but a win is the most direct path.
Â
The Blue Jays and Red Devils entered Wednesday night's game with a combined two losses on the season and both with a realistic shot at the aforementioned top seed. Less than 15 minutes in, it was the Blue Jays who would score the all-important first goal of the game to grab the momentum.
Â
Freshman
Terren Davis stepped in front of a clearing attempt by Dickinson goalie
Pico Gray out near midfield to ignite the scoring play. Two quick passes later and it was junior
Carolyn Johnson threading a pass into the area to freshman
Katie Derby, who took one touch before ripping a shot over the head of Gray for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Â
Johns Hopkins would collect seven of the nine first-half shots, but Gray turned away the only other two offerings on frame besides Derby's to keep the game scoreless at the break.
Â
The game opened up a bit after halftime with the team combining for 16 shots, including nine by the Blue Jays, but only one of those 16 would find the next. In the 58
th minute, it was a throw-in about 30 yards from the endline to the right of Gray that would lead to the insurance goal for the Blue Jays, and again Derby would be involved.
Â
This time, Derby collected the throw near the top of the box and one-touched a pass to junior
Gwen Rauvola, who floated a shot from the edge of the area over the outstretched hands of Gray and into the far corner of the goal. The goal was the fifth of the season for Rauvola, while the assist gives Derby a team-leading 14 points on the year.
Â
Sophomore
Ella Kruntchev earned her seventh solo shutout of the season and the team's 10
th of the year by making two saves, both in the second half, but neither after the 60
th minute. The Blue Jay defense allowed just four shots in the final 30 minutes, none of which were on target. The Blue Jays outshot the Red Devils 16-9 and took three of the five corners in the game.
Â
With two goals and the shutout tonight, the Blue Jays have outscored their opponents 20-1 during their current eight-game winning streak.
Â
While the seeding for the Centennial Tournament won't be set until after Saturday's final regular season games, the Blue Jays area assured of hosting a semifinal game at Homewood Field on Friday, November 6.
