BALTIMORE, MD – Sixteen players notched at least one point as fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins beat visiting Colgate, 23-6, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 5-1 while the Raiders fall to 2-2 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Hopkins jumped on Colgate early, scoring five goals in just eight minutes and 20 seconds.
Sienna Chirieleison got the Blue Jays opened the scoring with an eight-meter goal at 13:28.
Ava Angello then scored four straight goals, in just three minutes and 10 seconds, to stake JHU to the early 5-0 lead. Sarah Marcovici scored off a feed from Ella Bishara with 3:26 to play in the first to get the Raiders on the board. That sparked a 3-1 Colgate spurt as the visitors made it a 6-3 game early in the second.
Paige Willard scored on a quick stick off a
Taylor Hoss pass at 12:02 to ignite a quick 4-0 run for the Blue Jays.
Zoey Smith capped the run when she took a pass from Hoss and beat Maddie Stevens high-to-low at 6:30 to put Hopkins up 10-3. Marcovici and Walsh then sandwiched scores round another Hoss to Smith connection, and it was 11-5 with 2:41 to play in the second.
Just 30 seconds after Walsh's goal,
Lacey Downey found Willard cutting across the crease, and she turned and scored. That ignited a 6-0 Hopkins' run that spanned just under nine minutes and saw JHU go up 17-5. Six Blue Jay scored during the run, which included the first career goal for
Eleri Colon on a scoop and score. Olivia McDonald halted the run for the Raiders, but the Blue Jays answered with goals from
Jaelyn Bennett and
Ally Campbell, her first career goal, and it was 19-6 Hopkins.
Lucy Lederman got one back for Colgate with 9:07 to play, but Hopkins would close out the game on a 4-0 run.
Brooke Koffler and
Emmy Haugen scored their first career goals during the game-ending run.
Angello (5g, 2a) and Hoss (1g, 5a) led the Blue Jays with seven and six points, respectively. Hoss' five assists are a career high. Downey and Chirieleison notched two goals and an assist each and seven other Blue Jays had two points. Downey and
Jillian McNaughton caused four turnovers each, while
Kendall Crawford had a career-best three takeaways.
Laurel Gonzalez controlled a game-high nine draws and McNaughton added a game-high four ground balls.
Aubrey McMahon (3a), Marcovici (2g, 1a) and Bishara (1g, 2a) led the Raiders with three points each. Gracie DeSimone controlled six draws and McMahon added four. Bishara also had a team-best three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Hopkins is right back at Homewood Field on Tuesday, March 3 to take on James Madison. Opening draw is slated for 4:00 pm.
