BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 3/3 Johns Hopkins baseball team erupted for a program-record 34 runs on 23 hits in a 34-14 victory over No. 15/27 Gettysburg Tuesday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 20-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
The 34 runs set a new program record, surpassing Hopkins' 32-1 win over Hood earlier this season, which had tied the previous mark. The total also stands as the highest single-game run output by a Division III team this season. Additionally, it marks the second time this year the Blue Jays have hit two grand slams in the same game.
Hopkins wasted no time taking control, sending 16 batters to the plate in a 12-run first inning fueled by eight hits.
Clay Hartje led off with a triple, and
Luke Baker followed with an infield single to drive in the game's first run.
William Jaun pushed the lead to 3-0 before
Lukas Geer launched a two-run home run to make it 5-0. Later in the inning, Hartje crushed a first-pitch grand slam in his second plate appearance to extend the lead to 9-0, and Jaun capped the frame with a three-run homer to make it 12-0.
Gettysburg (19-4, 2-1) answered in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on three consecutive hits—including two doubles—to cut the deficit to 12-3.
The Blue Jays continued to pour it on in the third, sending 12 batters to the plate and extending the lead to 19-3. Baker opened the inning with a leadoff home run, while
Shane Keough added a two-run single up the middle. Back-to-back home runs by
Keiffer Ary and
Hamilton Adams pushed the advantage even further.
Geer struck again in the fourth with his second two-run homer of the game, making it 21-3. Hopkins added six more runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 27-3, highlighted by RBI singles from
Alex Shane, Jaun and Geer, along with an RBI single from Ary. Hartje later drove in two more runs to cap the inning.
The Blue Jays added seven runs in the seventh to reach 34, highlighted by
Nathan Lewis' grand slam—the team's second of the game. Gettysburg mounted a late push with 11 runs in the bottom half of the inning, but
William Hancock recorded the final out to secure the victory.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, April 3, when it hosts Gettysburg in the second game of a home-and-home series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
