BALTIMORE, MD –
Ava Angello and
Taylor Hoss combined for 15 points and
Laurel Gonzalez became the program's all-time draws leader as fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins topped UAlbany, 21-7, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays improve to 15-4 while the Great Danes end their season at 12-6.
UAlbany got on the board first, when Jaedyn Fink scored on a quick-stick off a feed from Ravan Marsell just 40 seconds in. Angello answered with back-to-back goals in an 11-second span to put Hopkins on top, 2-1. That sparked an 18-0 Blue Jay run that spanned 35 minutes as JHU grabbed control of the game. Angello, who entered the game needing four points to reach 300 for her career, needed just 12 minutes and 16 seconds to reach the milestone.
Seven players scored during that game-changing 18-goal run, fueled by seven from Angello.
Paige Willard notched a hat trick and Hoss scored twice while handing out five helpers.
Sienna Chirieleison also poured in a career-high three assists and five points during the run.
Catrina Rowe and Mya Carroll halted Hopkins' run with back-to-back goals in the third quarter. Rowe scored on the doorstep at the 6:30-mark to get the Great Danes back on the board. Just three minutes later, Carroll fired home an eight-meter shot and it was 18-3 Hopkins after three.
Brooke Koffler opened the fourth quarter, scoring off the dodge and diving to avoid the crease. Just 75 seconds later, some great tic-tac-toe passing ended with a
Jaelyn Bennett score in tight. Kloey Roos answered with consecutive free position goals, followed by a Frink eight meter and Hopkins led 20-6 with 4:43 to go in the fourth.
Sally Zinsner got one back for the Blue Jays with a free position goal at 4:43. Roos had the final say however, scoring off a Marsell helper in the final minute.
Angello finished with a game-high seven goals and eight points and moved into second in school history with 304 career points. In addition, she broke the school Division I goals record with her 68
th of the season. Hoss matched her career highs with seven points and five assists. Gonzalez finished with 17 draw controls, one shy of her career high, and giving her 301 for her career. That broke
Shelby Harrison's career record of 297. Chirieleison (2g, 3a), Willard (3g, 1a) and
Lacey Downey (2g, 1a) all had multi-point games. Downey also caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
Roos led the Great Danes with three goals while Frink had a pair. Marsell also handed out a pair of assists, while Carroll controlled four draws to go with a goal.
Notes: Hopkins' 15 wins ties the school Division I record, set in 2014. It is one shy of the all-time school record of 16, set in 1994.
