SALEM, WV – George Washington used a 5-2 run in the final nine and a half minutes to hold off Johns Hopkins, 10-8, on Sunday morning at the Salem Open. The Blue Jays have their five-game win streak snapped as they slip to 5-3 while the Revs improve to 8-4.
Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead just two and a half minutes into the game, fueled by a pair of goals from
Ben Lucas. Ben McDade then scored at the 2:51-mark to spark a four-goal run as the Revolutionaries grabbed a 5-4 lead with 7:27 to play in the third.
Blake Lowe and
Matthieu Giauque halted the run with back-to-back goals just 45 seconds apart. That put the Blue Jays up 6-5 with 5:20 on the clock.
Gabriele Molfino scored twice in a 23-second span to ignite that game-ending 5-2 run.
Luke Mendelsohn pulled the Blue Jays within one with 1:03 to play, but Yam Kabakov capped the Revs' run, putting them up 10-8, with 34 ticks on the clock.
Mendelsohn led the Blue Jays with two goals and an assist, while Lucas added a pair of goals.
Max Belcher added two points (1g, 1a).
Owen Bartlett finished with four drawn ejections and four steals and Mendelsohn also grabbed four steals.
Alec Baker swiped six steals and blocked a pair of shots. Baker also hit two milestones in the game, notching his 100
th career assist and 200
th point. He is the 12
th player in program history to tally 100 assists.
Sebastian Isaacs finished with 10 saves and a pair of steals in the cage.
Hopkins wraps up the Salem Open on Sunday afternoon versus Gannon.
