NORTHBROOK, IL – Johns Hopkins senior linebacker Browning Trainer is among the 22 college football players and one honorary coach from all divisions of the NCAA and NAIA who have been named to the 35th Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® for outstanding contributions to their communities it was announced today.  Trainer is the eighth Johns Hopkins football player named to the team as he joins Jim Sanders (2005), Brian Nickel (2006), Tim Miller (2009), Alan Gorny (2022), Spencer Uggla (2023), Thomas Grehan (2024) and Charlie Pearson (2025).
 
With Trainer's selection, Johns Hopkins is one of just four schools in the nation at any level of college football to have a player named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team ® in each of the last five years.  Bethel (MN), Morningside (IA) and St. John's (MN) join Johns Hopkins as the only football programs that have been represented on the team in each of the last five years.
 
This year's team was selected from 162 nominees, submitted by college sports information directors and coaches nationwide, spotlighting student-athletes who collectively have contributed more than 12,000 hours of volunteer service, raised more than $100,000 for charitable causes, launched seven community initiatives and foundations and used their NIL earnings to support causes they care about.
 
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. The AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.
 
From the 162 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients include:

• 11 players from the NCAA FBS
• 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
• 1 honorary head coach, BYU's Kilane Sitake

 
All members are selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists who look for exceptional leadership on and off the football field.
 
To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team^®, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
 
Trainer is majoring in economics with a triple minor in business, financial economics and environmental studies and carries a 3.66 cumulative grade point average.  A Second Team All-Centennial Conference selection last season after leading the team in tackles (102), Trainer also earned CSC Academic All-District honors in 2025.  Trainer has been named to the Dean's List five times, has twice been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and was named to the Academic All-Centennial Team last year (individuals who earn All-Centennial honors and earn a spot on the CC Academic Honor Roll are named to the Academic All-Centennial Team).
 
Trainer has been an active member of the Johns Hopkins and extended Baltimore communities since his arrival at Homewood in 2023.  Among his key initiatives:

Fall 2023 – Present
• Serve student-led nonprofit empowering Baltimore youth to thrive through sports mentorship.
• Joined program during first semester at Hopkins (fall, 2023) and steadily rose through the organization until being elected President last spring.
• Has been actively involved in the operation of annual events run independently or in partnership with other community organizations, including a 7-on-7 football tournament fundraiser that has generated more than $50,000 in the last two years.
• Established the organization's grant-writing team to ensure future growth and expansion of the program and services offered to Baltimore area youth through Blue Jays for Baltimore.

Fall 2024
• Completed training in the fall of 2024 to become a YoungLife mentor.  YoungLife is an organization that builds relationships with young people and introduces them to Jesus and the Gospel.
• Attends weekly mentor breakfasts in Baltimore.  Breakfasts consist of a time of activity, conversation and a devotional to engage youth with mentors and peers.
• Has organized additional activities with his mentee and others outside the normal weekly breakfast gatherings.
• Attended YoungLife camp in the summer of 2026.

Fall 2023 – Present
• Mentors an elementary school student weekly at community church to supplement their in-school learning.
• Tailors sessions based on student needs, strengths, and areas for improvement.
• Worked with the same student during 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years before transitioning to a new student in the fall of 2025.  Has maintained a close mentoring relationship with initial student while building a relationship with new mentee.
 
Classroom Champions
2026 – Present
• Captain of a mentor pair for Classroom Champions, which is an organization that pairs college, professional, and Olympic athletes with K-8 classrooms at public schools to share their mindset and life experience with students.
• Included in the program are the recording of messages for viewing by the students as well as in-person visits by the mentors to the schools.
