BALTIMORE, MD – Through 60 minutes of Wednesday's women's soccer game between 17^th-ranked Johns Hopkins and visiting Penn State Harrisburg, the Blue Jays were in control.
 
When Blue Jay freshman Katie Derby poked home the second goal of her young career off a cross from junior Kendall Frederick in the 58^th minute, Johns Hopkins had taken all 11 shots in the game and held what seemed to be a comfortable 3-0 lead.

That all changed in the span of less than a minute a short time later as Teagan Paragon got free behind the defense to get the Lions (0-4-1) on the board at the 68:17 mark and Abigail Mahaffey followed 53 seconds later when she fired home the rebound off an Abigail Frew shot that was turned away but not controlled by Blue Jay goalie Stephanie Wyszkowski.  From 3-0 to 3-2 in less than a minute.
 
The frenetic paced continued as Frew blew one just over the crossbar in the 71^st minute and Johns Hopkins' Terren Davis fired a rocket off the post less than two minutes later.  The Lions pressured down the stretch but couldn't find the equalizer; their last chance came off a free kick in the final 90 seconds that Frew redirected over the bar from in tight.

Early on, the Blue Jays wasted little time – just under four minutes – to grab a lead that was later threatened but never relinquished.  Senior Sayre Burwell worked forward from near midfield, met little resistance and fed a ball into the box that bounced once as it approached Penn State Harrisburg goalie Sydney Mulka.  Just before Mulka could grab the loose ball, Blue Jay junior Carolyn Johnson got a foot on it and flicked it past a defenseless Mulka from six yards out to give Hopkins the early cushion.
 
That lead would hold for more than 25 minutes despite heavy pressure from the Blue Jays, who would collect all 10 first-half shots in the game.  Mulka would turn away six of those offerings, but Davis beat her from deep as she collected a feed from Johnson in the middle of the field and fired a left-footed laser into the corner of the goal past a diving Mulka to double the lead with her first career goal.

The two-goal lead held into the 58^th minute when Derby scored to give the Jays a 3-0 lead that would hold for just under 11 minutes.  Paragon's goal ignited the frantic final 22 minutes of what eventually became the 3-2 Blue Jay victory.  This was just the 17^th time in program history that the Blue Jays have won a game by that score.
 
Johns Hopkins (4-0-2) outshot the Lions 15-5, although it was Penn State Harrisburg that earned both corners in the game.  Mulka finished with eight saves, while Wyszkowski had the one after coming on at the half or Blue Jay starter Ella Kruntchev.  
 
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 19 when the Blue Jays travel to Swarthmore for their Centennial Conference opener against the Garnet.
