PROVIDENCE, RI – Johns Hopkins rallied from a first-quarter deficit to beat MIT, 15-13, in double overtime Saturday morning in the first game of the Burno Invite. The Blue Jays improve to 8-3 on the season while the Engineers fall to 2-6.
 
MIT jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead, fueled by three goals from Casper Lightner. Hopkins wasted little time getting back into it in the second quarter as the Blue Jays scored twice in the first 62 seconds to cut the deficit to 5-3. Lightner answered at 6:40 to push the Engineers' lead to 6-3.
 
Jasper Hirt scored with 2:46 to play in the second to spark a three-goal run to end the quarter. Matthieu Giauque made it a two-goal game at 1:37 and then Luke Mendelsohn scored a six-on-five with 32 ticks on the clock to tie the game at six at the half.
 
MIT sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Mason Hofmann to open the third and it was 8-7 Engineers. Alec Baker answered at 3:17 to tie the game at eight, but MIT scored the final two of the stanza to take a 10-8 lead into the fourth.
 
Giauque scored just 24 seconds into the quarter and then Hofmann tied it at the 5:11-mark. MIT retook the lead just 31 seconds later with a Lightner five-meter goal. Ben Lucas and Hofmann scored twice in a 70-second span to put the Blue Jays up 12-11 with 2:09 to play. Luca Morocco then forced overtime, scoring with just nine ticks on the clock for the Engineers.
 
Mendelsohn scored an exclusion goal 68 seconds into the first overtime period and JHU led 13-12. Jake Schweizer answered 30 seconds later to tie the game. Owen Bartlett then scored twice in the final 58 seconds to stake the Blue Jays to a 15-13 lead heading into the second overtime. Sebastian Isaacs made a trio of saves for the Blue Jays in the second overtime to seal the win.
 
Hofmann and Giauque led the Blue Jays with three goals each while Bartlett and Mendelsohn had two apiece. Isaacs notched nine saves to earn the win.
 
Hopkins returns to action at 2:30 pm to take on Harvard in the second of three games Saturday.
