  • COLLEGE FOOTBALL FINAL Swarthmore 3 Johns Hopkins 37

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins senior running back Adam Gentile rushed for a career-high 219 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Blue Jays to a 37-3 victory over visiting Swarthmore. The win improved Hopkins' record to 2-0, 1-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Garnet Tide fall to 1-1, 0-1. The win is also the ninth for Johns Hopkins over Swarthmore.

Gentile wasted little time putting the Blue Jays ahead for good as he capped a six-play, 80-yard drive with a 39-yard scoring run with 8:50 to play in the first quarter. He added a one-yard scoring run in the third quarter to push the lead to 24-3 after the Blue Jays had sprinted to a 17-3 halftime lead.

Swarthmore's lone points came on a 27-yard field goal by Rob Castellucci with 5:04 to play in the second quarter. The seven-play, 40-yard drive was set up Brian Byrnes' block of a Matt Andrade 34-yard field goal attempt for the Blue Jays. That would prove to be the highlight for the Garnet Tide however as the Blue Jays limited Swarthmore to just 30 yards rushing on 31 attempts and 146 yards of total offense for the game.

Gentile, who had rushed for a career-high 218 yards in a 52-35 win over Gettysburg last October, paced a ground attack which generated 363 yards. Freshman Kevin Johnson added 61 yards on seven carries and junior Scott Martorana added 56 yards on 10 attempts as the Blue Jays amassed 510 yards of total offense.

In all, the Blue Jays had five rushing touchdowns as Martorana, Johnson, and senior quarterback Jamie Monica all added one-yard scoring runs to go with the two rushing touchdowns Gentile picked up. The 219 yards for Gentile moved him into second place on the all-time rushing list at Johns Hopkins as he now has 2,356 career rushing yards. He needs just 279 yards to become Hopkins' all-time leading rusher. In addition, his two rushing touchdowns give him 20 in his career, good for fourth place on the all-time list at Hopkins.
