Bernstein Ties 71-Year-Old School Record in Loss
KINGS POINT, NY -- Senior Jeff Turpen hit sophomore Jay DeBruhl on a 16-yard touchdown pass with less than six minutes remaining to lead Kings Point to a 24-20 come-from-behind victory over Johns Hopkins at Captain Tomb Field. The loss snaps a five-game road winning streak for the Blue Jays and drops their record to 2-1, while the Mariners improve to 2-2 with the win. Hopkins appeared to have retaken control of the game just prior to what proved to be the game-winning score. After Matt Warren's 27-yard field with 5:58 to play gave Kings Point a 17-13 advantage, Johns Hopkins' Harrison Bernstein returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Blue Jays the momentum and a 20-17 lead with 5:40 to play. The 95-yard kickoff return tied the Johns Hopkins record for the longest kickoff return in school history. The record had been set in 1928 by Howard Caplan in a 14-13 loss against Columbia and was the second-oldest standing record at Johns Hopkins.
However, Turpen guided the Mariners on a 10-play, 79-yard drive which culminated with his second TD pass of the day to DeBruhl with 1:43 to play and Dan Quinn stopped Hopkins' last drive when he picked off a Jamie Monica pass as the Mariner 15-yard line to seal the win.
Johns Hopkins had taken a 10-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game as sophomore quarterback Rob Heleniak connected with junior running back Scott Martorana on a 76-yard touchdown pass just four minutes into the game to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead. The pass was the longest at Johns Hopkins since 1991, when John Guglielmo hit Gary Campbell with a 76-yard scoring pass in a 40-14 win over Georgetown. Matt Andrade's 25-yard field goal eight minutes later made it 10-0 and the Blue Jays appeared to have control.
Kings Point quickly took the lead, however as Turpen hit DeBruhl from 35 yards out with 1:38 to play in the first quarter to make it 10-7. Turpen made it 14-10 when he scored on a four-yard run just five seconds into the second quarter after Brian Aldridge returned an interception 34 yards to the Blue Jay eight yard line.
Andrade's 34-yard field goal in the third quarter cut the deficit to 14-13, setting the stage for the final scoring flurry in the last six minutes. The 10 fourth-quarter points for Kings Point represent the first points the Blue Jays have allowed in the fourth quarter this season.
Heleniak passed for a career-high 213 yards and senior running back Adam Gentile rushed for 80 yards on 20 carries and caught four passes for 59 yards to lead the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins will next be in action on Saturday, October 2 when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg for a Centennial Conference matchup with the Bullets. Johns Hopkins has currently won four straight against Gettysburg, which defeated Swarthmore, 55-8 on Saturday.
