A native of nearby Eldersburg, Maryland and a graduate of Baltimore’s McDonogh School, Joel Jorgensen is entering his third season as a member of the Johns Hopkins coaching staff. Jorgensen will again coach the Blue Jay strong safeties under the direction of defensive coordinator Mickey Rehring.
In his first season at Johns Hopkins, Jorgensen helped the Blue Jays post an 11-1 record with a Centennial Conference title and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs. The Blue Jay defense forced a Centennial-high 27 turnovers on the year and finished in the top three in the league in total defense (356.9), passing defense (185.7) and scoring defense (19.5). Jorgensen’s top performer was Dan Johnson, who earned First Team All-Centennial Conference honors.
A year ago, the Blue Jay defense allowed just 18.0 points per game, forced 27 turnovers and his top two players - Addison Quinones and Ian Lodge - both earned First Team All-Centennial.
Jorgensen is a 2016 graduate of Saint Anselm College, where he played in all 33 games over his last three years for the Hawks. He recorded 138 tackles, eight sacks, 13 tackles for losses, eight forced fumbles and a pair of interceptions during his three seasons as a regular in the lineup.
Jorgensen capped his career with a standout final season in 2015 as he finished fourth on the team in tackles (72) and led the team in sacks (4), tackles for losses (6.5) and forced fumbles (4) from his spot at linebacker.
