Eakins joined head coach Bill Nelson's staff for the 2013-14 season and coaches the Blue Jay defense as well as player development. He spent time on the coaching staff of the NBA D-League Idaho Stampede and helped the team to the 2008 NBA D-League title. While with the Stampede, Eakins was responsible for player development for members of the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Sonics (now Oklahoma Thunder). He also spent two years in Germany, working with the Brose Baskets.

In 2014-15, Hopkins led the Centennial Conference and ranked 14th in the nation in scoring defense (59.8 ppg). JHU also led the conference in scoring margin (11.3), ranked second in steals (7.5), field goal percentage defense (.406) and third in blocked shots (4.0).

In Eakins' first season with the Blue Jays, the team ranked fourth in the Centennial Conference and 39th in the nation in scoring defense (64.3 ppg). JHU also led the CC in total steals (202), ranked second in blocks (4.5 bpg) and fourth in defensive rebounds (25.00 rpg), field goal percentage defense (.412) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.325).

Eakins moved to Maryland in 2008 and has been doing player development throughout the country and internationally for the past five years. In addition, he has coached players at the youth, college and professional levels through his non-profit organization International Basketball Academy (IBA). Eakins was raised in a basketball family as his father, Jim, played professionally in the ABA for eight seasons, played in the 1974 ABA All-Star game and won a pair of ABA titles in 1969 and 1976. He also played two seasons in the NBA after the ABA-NBA merger in 1976.

Eakins earned a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts and Communication from Brigham Young University. He later earned his Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership/Communications from Gonzaga University. Eakins resides in Frederick MD with his wife, Missy, and their children Morgyn, Jadyn, Torbyn and Brittyn. Morgyn plays volleyball at Frederick Community College.
