Ricky Hernandez joined the Johns Hopkins men's basketball staff in May 2018. He came to Homewood after a two-year stint at Moravian College where he was an assistant coach for the Greyhounds.

Hernandez has helped Johns Hopkins to an 90-22 (.803) record, two Centennial Conference (CC) Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He has coached 10 All-Centennial Conference selections, including two-time CC Player of the Year and First Team All-American Conner Delaney, and two-time CC Defensive Player of the Year Sidney Thybulle.

This past season, Hernandez helped the Blue Jays to a 25-5 record and the program's first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 since 2015. The 25 wins tied the school record and is JHU's third straight season with at least 23 wins.

In October 2020, Hernandez was named one of the top Division III Assistants in the nation by the Minority Coaches Association (MCA).

In his time in Bethlehem, Hernandez helped Moravian to 39 wins, a pair of Landmark Conference regular season championships, the 2018 Landmark Conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. In Hernandez's first year on the staff (2016-17), the Greyhounds won 19 games - the most wins by the program since 1987-88 - tying the school record. The following year, the team broke the school record for wins (20), as well as the records for points (2,385), field goals (825), three-point field goals (322), assists (455), blocks (111) and steals (317). He coached four all-conference selections as well as one D3hoops All-Mid-Atlantic honoree.

Prior to Moravian, Hernandez spent two years on the staff at Division II East Stroudsburg, where he was a graduate assistant coach. He coached two Honorable Mention All-Americans as well as three All-PSAC players and helped the Warriors to the 2015 PSAC East Championship. Hernandez has also coached at number camps and clinics along the East Coast for the last eight years.

Hernandez is a 2008 graduate of West Chester, where he earned a degree in psychology. He also has a Masters in Organizational Development & Leadership from Saint Joseph's.

Hernandez resides in Lancaster, PA with his wife, Katie, and their sons, Bryson and Justus.
