Herford returns for his fifth season on the Johns Hopkins staff as the goalkeeping coach in 2014. He coached Nick Cerrone to Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference honors in 2011 and Second Team honors in 2012. Cerrone was the first JHU keeper to earn All-CC honors since 2008.

Herford is a 2009 graduate of Frostburg State University, where he was a two-year starter for the Bobcats. As a junior, he led FSU to the ECAC South Region Tournament title game with a 12-9-1 record and earned All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Honorable Mention honors. Herford earned second team all-conference honors as a senior after finishing second in goals against average (0.77) and third in save percentage (.797) and shutouts (7).

Following his collegiate career, Herford signed with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Second Division. The City Islanders posted a 12-9-4 record in 2009 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup before being knocked out by D.C. United, 2-1.
