Jay Dunn

    Women's Track and Field Assistant Coach

Jay Dunn has been an assistant to Coach Van Allen since 2000. Although specializing in the throwing events, he also assists with sprinters, jumpers and other athletes. His coaching experience dates back to the 1960's when, as coach of the Baltimore Olympic Club, he worked with world and national class athletes and the club won several Penn Relays titles and placed many members on U.S. A. national track and field teams that competed internationally.

At Hopkins, Dunn’s throwing event athletes have won 31 individual indoor and outdoor Centennial Conference championships and broken all of the school’s throwing records. An additional 28 athletes have earned silver or bronze medals in those championships. Dunn coached Kathy Darling to a National Championship in the discus in 2003 and All-America honors in both the javelin and discus. 

In 2013, Emily Swenson won both the indoor and outdoor shot put and the javelin throw in the Centennial Conference Championship meets and achieved All America honors in the javelin. 
In the 2015 Centennial Conference Championships, Stephanie Cabral won the women’s javelin, while Tom Boucher took 3
rd in the men’s javelin and freshman Zach Jacobson was 3rd in the discus throw. Mike Spadaro won the decathlon outdoors and led a 1-2-3 Johns Hopkins finish in the indoor heptathlon. Freshman Jenn Su was 2nd in the indoor pentathlon and Paige Marsh was 2nd in the outdoor heptathlon.

Coach Dunn has a B.S. from Johns Hopkins, holds the diploma of the U. S. Track Coaches Association and is a gold medal member of the National Throws Coaches Association. He was named the NCAA Mideast Assistant Coach of the Year for Men's Outdoor Track in 2011 by the U.S. Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. As an athlete in the 1960's he was named to the All Marine Track Team, having won the 1st Marine Division 440 and 880 yard run championships.
