Gao joins the coaching staff of the Johns Hopkins men's and women's fencing teams in 2008-19 and will coach the Epeeists.

Gao is a national champion and has many top three finishes in Epee at the China National Fencing Championships, including individual first-place finishes in 2002, 2003 and 2004 team first-place finishes in 2000 and 2003. In addition, he earned first place in the men's Epee (individual) and third place in the men's Epee (team) at the 2004 Asian Fencing Championships. 

Gao has been a fencer with the Chinese National Men’s Epee Team and an assistant coach of the Chinese National Women’s Epee Team at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
