Steve Malvaso

Steve Malvaso was hired as Assistant Director for Student Athlete Success in August 2019, and elevated to Associate Director for Student Athlete Success beginning in the 2022-23 Academic Year.

In his role, Malvaso serves as the primary academic advisor, student success coach, and learning specialist for Blue Jays’ Division I Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse programs. He also serves as a secondary academic support resource for the Blue Jays’ 22 Division III varsity teams for the Return to Learn program, as well as other school-meets-sport situations that go beyond the typical level of focus of most faculty and staff across campus.

As a member of Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts & Sciences academic advising staff, Malvaso works closely with School-wide academic advisors to enhance their knowledge about supporting student-athletes in successfully balancing and maximizing their dual roles. He also collaborates with Learning Den, PILOT, Study Consulting, and Center for Student Success staff to advocate for academic resources for student-athletes and underrepresented student populations at Johns Hopkins.

Prior to his time at Johns Hopkins, Malvaso served as an Academic Coordinator for football and women’s track and cross country at the University of Iowa, where he is currently a PhD candidate in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies. His key contribution to Student-Athlete Academic Services’ was the PASS (Personalized Academic Success System) Initiative, a research-based metric and structure created to aid Academic Coordinators in collaborating with their student-athletes to develop evolving and ongoing individualized academic success plans. In addition to his role with Hawkeye Athletics, Malvaso served as a graduate and undergraduate course creator and instructor, graduate admissions recruiter and coordinator, and graduate researcher. His research published during his time at Iowa focuses on navigating interpersonal conflict across various social identities.

Malvaso also served as a Residence Hall Coordinator at the University of Delaware, creating and implementing curricular models to engage first year students living on campus. Residential curriculum design writing led Malvaso to formally enter the athletics sphere through research, where he collaborated with Dr. Kristina Navarro to publish articles on student-athlete development.

A graduate of Siena College with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Malvaso went on to earn his Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University. He is also a member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A).
