First Day at Johns Hopkins: June 27, 2022

Maddie Hawkins was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics and Director of Recreation on September 30, 2024.

In her role as Associate AD, Hawkins steers a dedicated team of eight full-time professionals alongside a part-time and student workforce numbering more than 180 individuals.  She will oversee and manage a campus-wide recreation program that services a vibrant community of more than 6,000.  The program is headquartered in the Ralph S. O'Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being, which underwent a $27 million renovation in 2021.

Hawkins has direct responsibility and oversight for Johns Hopkins' extensive fitness programming, club sport and intramural offerings, experiential education activities and all internal and external special events that take place in the O'Connor Center.  She also has oversight of all budget operations within the recreation program, including revenue generation, fee structures and other fiscally-related initiatives.

Hawkins arrived at Johns Hopkins in June 2022 as a Fitness Coordinator before assuming the role of Assistant Director of Recreation for Fitness in September 2022, a role she held until her promotion in September 2024.  During that time, she hired, trained and supervised a student and professional staff of fitness instructors, personal trainers, F45 instructors and independent contractors who have provided extensive programmatic offerings to members of the Johns Hopkins community.

Hawkins has worked closely with campus partners from Student Health and Well-Being, Student Conduct, Residence Life and Off-Campus Housing in meeting the ever-changing fitness and well-being desires of the department's constituents.  She has also played a key role in several capital projects within the department, including the recent weight room renovation in the recreation center and the renovation of fitness spaces in several other buildings on campus.

Prior to arriving at Johns Hopkins, Hawkins founded her own fitness company – Fast Feat Fitness – in 2013 and continues to design and deliver custom fitness solutions to individuals and groups.  She also served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Oldfields School from 2015-2020 and as the Head Lacrosse Coach of the Hereford Lacrosse Club from 2016-2022.
Hawkins' coaching experience also includes time with several local Baltimore sports organizations such as Top of The Bay Lacrosse,  Hereford Rec Council, Coppermine Lacrosse, and the Jemicy School where she served as the women's varsity soccer coach from 2013-2015.

Hawkins graduated from James Madison University in 2011 with a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.  She is currently completing her MBA at  the Sellinger School of Business, Loyola University of Maryland.
