CARLISLE, Pa. -- Dickinson's Drew Magyar booted a 34-yard field goal in the first overtime period and Johns Hopkins senior Matt Andrade missed a 32-yarder that would have sent the game to a second overtime period as the Red Devils knockoff the Blue Jays, 17-14 at Biddle Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves Dickinson's record to 4-4. 2-2 in the Centennial Conference, while the Blue Jays fall to 4-3, 2-2.
Dickinson had the first possession in overtime and three plays netted just eight yards to the Hopkins 17-yard line. Magyar then converted on his 34-yarder to force Hopkins into getting at least a field goal on its possession to extend the game. The Blue Jays picked up 11 yards on their first two plays, both runs by senior Scott Martorana, but a false start penalty, a rushing play, and two incomplete passes forced the Blue Jays into a fourth and 11 situation and Andrade's 32-yard attempt to extend the game sailed wide left.
Hopkins led 14-0 at the half, only to see the Red Devils force overtime by outscoring the Blue Jays, 14-0 in the second half. Mike Smith capped a quick two-play, 38-yard drive less than four minutes into the second half with a 36-yard scoring run to make it 14-7. Smith, who rushed for 184 yards in the win, added a 17-yard touchdown run with 5:23 remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 14. Magyar missed a 27-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter that would have won the game in regulation for the Red Devils.
Overtime appeared to be the last thing Hopkins would need as the Blue Jays jumped to a 14-0 halftime lead behind a pair of touchdown runs and a defense that allowed just 75 yards of total offense in the first half. Martorana rushed for 169 yards on the day and put the Blue Jays up 7-0 with a 12-yard touchdown run with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Rob Heleniak pushed the lead to 14-0 with a one-yard run with 9:22 remaining in the second quarter, but the Blue Jays failed to take advantage of four other first-half drives that ended in Dickinson territory. Andrade missed a 38-yard field goal attempt with 34 seconds left in the first half that would have pushed the lead to 17-0.
Martorana's 169 yards came on a career-high 44 carries, which was just one shy of the school record for most rushing attempts in a game. Heleniak was limited to just 9-of-24 passing for 74 yards with one interception.
Dickinson was led by Smith's 184 yards rushing, with a majority of that coming in the final quarter and half. Kevin Williams was just 3-of-10 for 81 yards with one interception through the air.
Johns Hopkins will host Franklin & Marshall next Saturday at 1:00 pm, while Dickinson will play at Gettysburg.
