Washington, DC - Sondra Pires scored on a penalty stroke with 9:38 left in overtime to lift the Catholic University field hockey team over Johns Hopkins, 4-3, Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Jays got off to a fast start, as defender Camille Fesche (Lutherville, MD/Dulaney) scored off an assist from Beth Pollock (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) just three and a half minutes into the game. The Cardinals answered back with 26:55 remaining in the first half on a goal by Maggie Mahoney, but Hopkins regained the lead just 34 seconds later when Kelly Hewitt (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township) scored an unassisted goal.

Hopkins took a two-goal lead with 8:26 left in the half when Ashley Robbins (Newtown Square, PA/Westtown School) took a pass from Rachel Callaway (Ardmore, PA/Lower Merion) and beat Catholic goalkeeper Katie Iannacone, and the Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead into the break.

Catholic came out strong in the second half, and Danielle Deon cut the lead to one when she scored with 32:21 left in the game. Andi Snyder tied the game with only 3:23 remaining when she scored off a feed from Deanna Felicianni, and Pires' goal won it in overtime.

Amanda Buchanan (Valley Forge, PA/Conestoga) played the entire regulation and made 14 saves in goal for Hopkins, which lost its sixth straight game. Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) played the overtime period. Catholic, ranked No. 18 in this week's NFHCA poll, improved to 9-1.

The Blue Jays will look to snap their losing streak Saturday when Hopkins travels to Bryn Mawr for a 12 noon contest with the Mawrters.
