Johns Hopkins Rolls Past Franklin & Marshall, 41-0

Box Score

Nov. 3, 2001

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins rolled up season-highs of 511 yards of total offense and 386 yards rushing and five different players scored touchdowns as the Blue Jays knocked off Franklin & Marshall, 41-0 in Centennial Conference football action at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 5-3, 3-2 in the Centennial Conference, while F&M dropped its eighth straight and slips to 1-8, 0-5.

Hopkins took all the drama out of the game by scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions and five of its first six. Senior running back Scott Martorana (Long Valley, NJ/W. Morris Central) capped the Blue Jays' opening possession with a 27-yard touchdown run just 3:38 into the game to make it 7-0. The touchdown run was the 25th of Martorana's career, tying the JHU career record for rushing touchdowns (Harry Leet/1958-60). It was the first of four rushing touchdowns on the day for Hopkins.

Freshman Adam Cook (New Freedom, PA/Susquehannock) extended the lead to 14-0 with a seven-yard scoring run late in the first quarter, and junior Kevin Johnson (Baltimore, MD/City) and sophomore Kyle Miller (Hanover, PA/South Western) added scoring runs of two and one yards, respectively, to make it 28-0 at the half. By then, the Blue Jays had rolled up 305 yards of total offense and were well on their way to securing a winning record for the eighth time in head coach Jim Margraff's 12 years at Hopkins.

Franklin & Marshall, which turned the ball over six times and never got inside the Johns Hopkins 30-yard line, generated just 73 yards rushing and 65 yards passing. Freshman quarterback Scott Stephen (Glenn Rock, NJ/Glenn Rock) got the start in place of junior David Makson (Wilton CT/Wilton), but he was just 4-for-11 for 35 yards and threw a pair of interceptions. He did rush 12 times for a team-high 46 yards, but the remainder of the Diplomat running backs managed just 27 yards on 20 carries.

In the third quarter, Johns Hopkins added a 10-yard touchdown reception by senior Zach Baylin (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) and 38 and 34-yard field goals by senior kicker Matt Andrade (Wyoming, DE/Caesar Rodney) to account for the final score of 41-0.

Cook led the way offensively for the Blue Jays as he rushed 10 times for 107 yards and the one touchdown. Martorana added 59 yards and the one touchdown on 11 carries and had two receptions for 11 yards as well. Johnson had 64 yards on just six carries and Baylin had a game-high six receptions for 41 yards and the one touchdown. Senior quarterback Rob Heleniak (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Academy) was 12-of-16 for 108 yards and threw the one touchdown pass to Baylin. He was also intercepted once.

The Johns Hopkins defense, which entered the game as the top-ranked unit in the Centennial Conference, continued its solid play in recent league action. In five Centennial Conference games this season, Johns Hopkins has allowed just 53 points (10.6 ppg.). In addition, opposing quarterbacks are just 31-of-86 (.360) for 328 yards and have thrown six interceptions in those five games.

Johns Hopkins will next be in action next Saturday when the Blue Jays travel to Westminster for a 1:00 pm at Western Maryland. Franklin & Marshall will close its season with a home game against Gettysburg next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
