Fredericksburg, VA - Jessica Morris scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Mary Washington College field hockey team past Johns Hopkins, 6-0, Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg.
Meghan McMahon opened the scoring for the Eagles just 5:47 into the game when she scored on a direct corner. Less than 10 minutes later, Morris made it a 2-0 game when she scored on a cross from Chrissy Soper. Three and a half minutes after Morris' goal, Shannon Nobile scored on a cross from Adrienne Trombley, and less than two minutes later Soper scored on a penalty stroke to give Mary Washington a 4-0 halftime lead.
The Eagles added goals from Morris and Trombley in the final five minutes to complete the scoring. Blue Jay goalkeeper Amanda Buchanan (Valley Forge, PA/Conestoga) made 11 saves in her first start of the season, while Eagle goalie Meredith McDonald collected three in posting the shutout.
Mary Washington out-shot Hopkins, 20-5, and held a 17-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Blue Jays will look to break their two-game losing streak on Wednesday, when they travel to Franklin & Marshall for a 5 p.m. Centennial Conference match.
