ASHLAND, Va. -- Senior quarterback Hunter Price threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns and the Randolph-Macon defense limited Johns Hopkins to just 225 yards of total offense as the Yellow Jackets held off the Blue Jays, 17-12 at Day Field Saturday afternoon. The loss is the second straight for the Blue Jays, who fall to 5-2. Randolph-Macon won for the fourth time in its last five games and improved to 5-2.
The Yellow Jackets scored all 17 of their points in the final 17:16 of the first half as they erased an early 6-0 deficit to grab a 17-6 halftime lead.
Price hooked up with Matt Gardner from four yards out to cap a nine-play, 65-yard drive with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter to give RMC a 7-6 lead. That lead stood until the last five minutes of the second quarter, when the 'Jackets scored 10 points to build the 11-point halftime advantage.
Dave Ping's 20-yard field goal polished off a 12-play, 47-yard drive to make it 10-6 with 4:47 left before halftime. The 'Jackets actually had a first-and-goal at the one-yard line, but the Blue Jay defense forced the field goal.
After the teams traded possessions over the next 4:37, Randolph-Macon got the ball back at the Hopkins 38-yard line with 10 seconds left. After an incomplete pass on first down, Price's hail mary pass was caught in the corner of the end zone by Marshall Haggard with no time remaining in the second quarter to push the lead to 17-6.
Johns Hopkins closed the deficit to 17-12 when freshman quarterback Zach DiIonno hooked up with sophomore Brian Wolcott on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 10:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Blue Jays had the ball four more times in the game, but never crossed midfield and turned the ball over on downs on their last possession with just under two minutes remaining to close the game.
DiIonno and Wolcott hooked up on a 61-yard touchdown pass with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter to give JHU the 6-0 lead. After both teams punted on their opening possession, DiIonno found Wolcott five yards behind the defense and Wolcott coasted into the end zone.
Wolcott, who had five receptions for 193 yards and one touchdown last week against Muhlenberg, had eight receptions for 187 yards and the two touchdowns. DiIonno was 11-of-30 for 193 yards and the two touchdowns. Freshman T.J. Lyons rushed for a game-high 37 yards on seven carries to lead the way on the ground for the Blue Jays.
Price, whose biggest play may have been a scrmable for 13 yards on a third-and-11 from the Hopkins 36 with just over a minute to play in the game, was 34-of-52 for 362 yards and the two touchdowns. The Blue Jay defense did come up with four interceptions and sacked Price five times. E.J. Bush was limited to just 28 yards on 17 rushes for Randolph-Macon as the Blue Jay defense limited the 'Jackets to 15 net yards rushing on 32 attempts.
