Hopkins Topples Villa Julie, 5-1, In Field Hockey

Oct. 8, 2002

Baltimore, MD - JHU sophomore forward Julia Finkel (Silver Spring, MD/Richard Montgomery) and freshman midfielder Meighan Roose (York, ME/York) each recorded a goal and an assist as the No. 16 Johns Hopkins field hockey team cruised to a 5-1 win over Villa Julie Tuesday night at Homewood Field.

At the 21:42 mark of the first half junior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) collected a shot that hit the post and scored to give the Blue Jays the early lead, and just seven minutes later Finkel fed Roose for a goal to put Hopkins ahead by two.

With 11:50 remaining in the half Finkel scored off a pass from junior forward Kelly Hewitt (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township), and the Blue Jays took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Hopkins added a goal just a minute and a half into the second period, as sophomore forward Kate Mandel (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) scored off a pass from Roose, but Josephine McFillin cut the lead back to three with an unassisted goal for Villa Julie at the 11:25 mark. JHU senior defender Jenn Parker (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) scored her first career goal on a penalty stroke with 5:04 remaining to cap the scoring.

Hopkins senior goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) needed to make just one save in 64 minutes of action, while freshman Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia), making her first career appearance, did not see a shot in the final six minutes. Gina Reuss stopped 12 shots in goal for the Mustangs, who fell to 5-11.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 5-4 this season, host another Baltimore rival Thursday when Hopkins faces the College of Notre Dame at Homewood Field in a 7 p.m. contest.
