Gettysburg, PA - Meg Goddu and Kate Hopkins each scored unassisted goals in the first half to lead the Gettysburg College field hockey team over No. 18 Johns Hopkins, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.
Hopkins falls to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bullets finish 5-13 overall and 4-5 in the league. Despite the loss the Blue Jays will compete in the conference tournament held this Saturday and Sunday in Westminster, MD, on the campus of McDaniel College. Game times and matchups will be announced Wednesday morning.
Gettysburg, which captured the 2001 league tournament title, struck first just 7:36 into the game when Gaddu scored an unassisted goal, and Hopkins gave the Bullets a 2-0 lead by scoring with just 10 seconds remaining in the first half.
JHU sophomore defender Jen Rolston (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) cut the lead in half with her first career goal off an assist from junior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) at the 29:13 mark of the second half, but the Blue Jays could not score the equalizer on Gettysburg goalkeeper Jessy O'Neill, who made four saves in the contest.
Hopkins senior goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made five saves in defeat, while Rolston recorded a defensive save in the first half.
The Bullets held a 12-8 advantage in shots, while the Blue Jays had a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.
