Westminster, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team used three second-half goals to post a 3-2 comeback victory over Washington College Saturday afternoon in the Centennial Conference Semifinals on the campus of McDaniel College.
The No. 2 seed Blue Jays, who improved to 12-8 this season, advance to Sunday's championship game at 12 noon against top-seeded McDaniel, which defeated No. 4 seed Franklin & Marshall, 1-0, in the day's first semifinal. The winner of that game earns an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament. The Shorewomen, the No. 3 seed, fell to 10-8 on the year.
Hopkins will now have appeared in all three conference title games after defeating Swarthmore, 1-0, in 2000, and falling to Gettysburg, 2-1, a year ago.
Washington College, which defeated the Blue Jays, 5-2, on October 22, got on the board with 12:04 remaining in the first half when Laura Scimeca scored off an assist from Julie Phillips.
Hopkins, which had lost five straight games away from Homewood Field, would respond as junior defender Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton) tied the game just seven minutes into the second half. JHU junior forward Kelly Hewitt (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township) put the Blue Jays ahead with an unassisted goal at the 16:17 mark, but the Shorewomen would answer to tied the game at two on an unassisted goal by Jessica McAdams with 9:38 remaining.
Just over three minutes later, Hopkins junior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season on a penalty stroke for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Shorewomen could not answer, as JHU senior goalkeeper Missi Schafhauser (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made 10 saves for the Blue Jays. Zina Hense made seven saves in goal for Washington College, which out-shot Hopkins, 15-12.
Hopkins, which defeated McDaniel, 1-0, on October 29 at Homewood Field, held a 10-9 advantage in penalty corners.
