SALISBURY, MD - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team went 1-3 at the Sea Gull Invitational hosted by Salisbury Invitational this weekend. The Blue Jays, now 8-11 overall, fell to Catholic (3-1), Frostburg State (3-0), and Salisbury (3-0), before defeating Richard Stockton (3-2) in their final match.

In the opening match, JHU fell to Catholic, 3-1 (30-20, 22-30, 19-30, 22-30) despite 13 kills from junior Samantha Raggi (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) in her first match of the season and 11 kills from junior Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood). Sophomore Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) added a team-high 19 digs, while senior Courtney Cromwell (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) tallied 33 assists.

In the second match on Friday, Hopkins was defeated by Frostburg State, 3-0 (28-30, 19-30, 23-30). Kaliades led the squad with 12 kills, while Raggi added seven. The Blue Jays then fell to host Salisbury, 3-0 (25-30, 24-30, 16-30) as Kaliades led the team with 11 kills, three aces, and seven digs. Cromwell chipped in with 20 assists and four digs.

JHU concluded the tournament on a positive note, defeating Richard Stockton, 3-2 (24-30, 21-30, 30-25, 30-21, 15-7). Cromwell led the Blue Jays with 20 digs, while Baydala totaled 41 assists and 13 digs. Senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) recorded a team-high 11 kills and added four blocks, while freshman Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul IV) collected seven blocks and eight kills.

Cromwell was named to the all-tournament team as she totaled 75 assists and 38 digs in four matches. Kaliades led the team with 41 kills in four matches and Baydala totaled 47 digs for the tournament.

The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins travels to face the College of Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m.
