Hopkins Men's Basketball Cruises Past McDaniel, 73-58

Westminster, MD - The No. 22 Johns Hopkins men's basketball team jumped out to a big early lead and held off McDaniel College to post a 73-58 win over the Green Terror Saturday afternoon at the Gill Center.

JHU junior guard Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) led a balanced Hopkins attack with 14 points and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, while senior center Mike Blaine (Washington, DC/Bishop Ireton) added 12 points and nine boards. Senior guard Jay Kreider (Sykesville, MD/River Hill) added 11 points and a game-high four assists for Hopkins, which won its sixth straight game to improve to 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Alan Hoyt scored 12 points while Jon Pearson added 11 and a team-best five rebounds for the Green Terror, who fell to 4-12 overall and 2-4 in league play.

After Pearson opened the scoring with a lay-up, the Blue Jays scored the next 10 points to take an early eight-point lead. Following a McDaniel three-pointer, Hopkins scored nine straight points to go ahead 19-5 at the 13:20 mark of the half. JHU stretched its lead to 32-14 on a lay-up by freshman guard Chris Fleisher (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) with 9:00 remaining before the Green Terror went on a 12-0 run to make it a 32-26 game with 4:08 to play.

However, the Blue Jays weathered the storm and took a 44-34 lead into the break, and McDaniel could not get closer than nine in the second half.

JHU sophomore forward Eric Toback (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) scored nine points off the bench while junior guard Brendan Kamm (Avon, NJ/Somerville) and freshman guard Frank Mason (Silver Spring, MD/Barrie School) each added eight. The Blue Jays, who have now won 11 straight meetings with McDaniel, shot 54.7 percent from the floor and held a commanding 43-26 rebounding edge.

The Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA, on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. conference showdown with Franklin & Marshall.
