WESTMINSTER, MD - Senior center Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) scored a game-high 26 points, but it was not enough as McDaniel defeated Johns Hopkins, 76-70 this afternoon in Centennial Conference women's basketball action.
The Blue Jays lost for the first time in conference play to fall to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial. McDaniel improved to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference. JHU has lost three straight games to the Green Terror, all of which were played at the Gill Center, and allowed its highest point total of the season.
The first half featured four ties and five lead changes before the Green Terror scored the final nine points to take a 43-34 advantage into halftime. Hopkins scored the first seven points of the second half and managed to tie the game 55-55 at the 9:11 mark on two free throws by junior guard Maureen Myers (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights). Following four additional lead changes, the Green Terror took the lead for good on a jumper by Jen Piccolomini with 3:51 remaining. McDaniel made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 38 seconds to seal the win.
Darling hit 11-of-15 shot from the field and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Myers scored 18 points and joined senior guard Ashley Shepler (Tornado, WV/Charleston Catholic) with a game-high five assists. Shepler added eight points, while sophomore forward Ashanna Randall (Media, PA/Penncrest) tallied six points and 10 rebounds. With her eight points, Shepler became the 24th player at Hopkins to score over 500 career points (507).
Despite hitting 50 percent (15-of-30) of their shots in the second half, the Blue Jays were just 1-of-9 on three pointers and 3-for-18 from beyond the arc for the games. JHU lost for the first time when shooting over 40 percent from the field.
Piccolomini and Toby McIntire each scored 14 points to lead McDaniel. Piccolomini grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Kelly Cramp added 13 points and seven rebounds. Brooke Weimer chipped in with nine points and was 3-of-3 on three pointers.
The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday as Hopkins hosts Centennial rival Franklin & Marshall at 7:00 p.m. in Goldfarb Gymnasium.
