Box Score Pittsburgh, PA - Johns Hopkins senior forward Steve Adams (Butler, PA/Butler) scored a game-high 23 points and junior guard Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) came off the bench to add a career-high 20 as the Blue Jay men's basketball team defeated Carnegie Mellon, 97-85, Tuesday night in Skibo Gymnasium.
With the Tartans holding a 12-11 lead with 12:41 remaining in the first half, Hopkins went on a 30-11 run over the next six and a half minutes, taking a 41-23 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Kevin Marquez (Oakton, VA/Oakton) at the 6:02 mark.
JHU scored the first eight points in the run, as Adams connected on a pair of free throws between two three-pointers by Righter. Marquez scored eight points in the spurt, while sophomore forward Marc Leone (Radnor, PA/Radnor) and freshman guard Frank Mason (Silver Spring, MD/Barrie School) each chipped in four.
The Blue Jays took their largest lead of the half at 49-28 on a lay-up by sophomore forward Eric Toback (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron), and Adams closed the half with a lay-up to send Hopkins to the locker room up 51-31.
Carnegie Mellon scored 54 points in the second half and three times cut the JHU lead to nine, but the Blue Jays held off each rally to secure their eighth straight win over the Tartans.
The 97 points were the most scored by Hopkins in a game since a 105-62 win over St. Mary's on November 20, 1992.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 8-3 with the win, shot 60 percent (30-50) from the field and 57.9 percent (11-19) from three-point range and had four players reach double figures. Marquez scored 11 points, while senior guard Brendan Kamm (Avon, NJ/Somerville) added 10 to go with four assists. Righter went 5-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and hit all six of his free throws, while Adams hit 7-of-13 shots and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Jason Walters led Carnegie Mellon with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Mickey Goetz came off the bench to add 17 points, five assists, and five steals. The Tartans fell to 4-5 on the season.
The Blue Jays travel to No. 4 Catholic Saturday for a 4 p.m. game in Washington, DC.
