Box Score
Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored the only goal of the game as the Blue Jay field hockey team shut out Washington College, 1-0, Tuesday night at Homewood Field.
Hopkins won its fifth straight game to improve to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in the Centennial Conference, and can clinch a berth in the league tournament with a win Saturday at Bryn Mawr. The Shorewomen fell to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Early in the second half Hopkins earned a penalty corner, and Farrelly passed the ball to senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA) at the top of the arc. Hewitt stopped the ball and pushed it to senior midfielder Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton), who fed Farrelly for a one-timer past Shorewomen goalkeeper Zina Hense with 28:38 remaining in the game.
The goal was the 23rd of Farrelly's career and moved her into 10th place on the JHU career points list with 53, while Hewitt now has 18 career assists, tied for fourth all-time at Hopkins.
Washington had a few good scoring chances with about 20 minutes remaining, but the Shorewomen could not find the back of the cage as JHU sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made five saves to post her second shutout of the season.
Washington out-shot Hopkins, 9-5, and held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. Hense made just one save for the Shorewomen.
The Blue Jays face the Owls Saturday at 1 p.m. in Bryn Mawr, PA.
