Oct. 3, 2003

Box Score

Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored the only goal of the game as the Blue Jays upset No. 11 Muhlenberg, 1-0, in Centennial Conference field hockey action Friday night at Homewood Field.

Late in the first half the Blue Jays were awarded a penalty corner, and Farrelly pushed the ball to senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA), who stopped it for senior midfielder Ashlee Duncan (Easton, MD/Easton) at the top of the circle. Duncan then fed Farrelly, who one-timed a shot past Mules goalkeeper Lauren Schram from six yards out with 6:05 remaining in the half.

Muhlenberg, which fell to 9-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference, out-shot Hopkins, 6-3, in the first half but could not get off a shot in the second. Kristen Bruschi, who leads the league with 12 goals, had a goal disallowed with 14:51 remaining after officials ruled the ball had hit a Mules player.

JHU sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made three first-half saves for the Blue Jays, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Schram stopped six shots in the Muhlenberg goal.

The Blue Jays, who held a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in penalty corners, host eighth-ranked Eastern Mennonite Saturday at 6 p.m.
