College Park, MD - Both Johns Hopkins swimming teams defeated Howard and fell to the host Terrapins Friday afternoon on the campus of the University of Maryland.
The Blue Jay men, who are now 1-2 on the season, defeated Howard, 166-30, and fell to Maryland, 127-97. The Hopkins women, who opened their season and are 1-1, topped the Bison, 164-37, and lost to the Terrapins, 156-66.
Sophomore Matt Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) won the 1000 freestyle in 9:42.05 for the JHU men, while junior J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) took the 200 individual medley in 1:55.89. Senior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Lourdes) won the 500 freestyle in 4:42.46, and senior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) captured the 100 breaststroke in 58.71.
Freshman Allie Foster (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.57 for the Blue Jay women.
Each team's 200 freestyle relay team won its respective race as well. The women's team of sophomore Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View), freshman Ariana Reks (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), freshman Kelly Robinson (Holden, MA/Worcester Academy), and freshman Ashley Devonshire (Pittsburgh, PA/Hampton) won in 1:42.85, while the men's team of sophomore Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie), senior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional), junior Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood), and sophomore Tyler Harris (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) won in 1:25.92.
The Blue Jays return to action on November 8-9 when both teams compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, PA.
