Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins sophomore midfielder Meighan Roose (Baltimore, MD/York-ME) scored two first-half goals and the Blue Jays held off a second-half rally by Washington & Lee to defeat the Generals, 4-3, in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Roose opened the scoring with 21:56 left in the first half on a goal off a penalty corner. JHU junior forward Kate Mandel (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) sent a pass to senior forward Kelly Hewitt (Stafford, VA/Springfield Township-PA), who stopped the ball and fed Roose for the game's first goal.
Roose then made it 2-0 with a goal on a penalty stroke, and Hopkins took the two-goal lead into halftime.
The Generals, who fell to 0-1 on the season, got on the board early in the second period as Kelly Taffe scored an unassisted goal with 31:40 remaining. The Blue Jays would answer, as senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) scored off a cross from Mandel to give Hopkins a 3-1 lead with 29:56 left.
Taffe brought Washington & Lee back within one by scoring off a feed from Kristen Brown at the 24:59 mark, but JHU sophomore forward Caite Kappel (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) made it a 4-2 game with an unassisted goal with 18:53 remaining.
Jane Beall scored off a Kitt Murphy assist with 5:40 to play, but the Blue Jays held off the Generals to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Hopkins sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) made seven saves for the Blue Jays, while Courtney Harrison made 10 saves and Elise Gelinas made five for Washington & Lee.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Salisbury to take on the fifth-ranked Sea Gulls at 4:30 p.m.
